The Hunger Games: Design Inspiration

I’m always impressed with how good set dressing transports me into the time and place of a film. I often use these ideas in “dressing” my own home. With the recent opening of “The Hunger Games,” I was definitely on the hunt for moments of great design inspiration. Here are my top picks:

Peeta’s Bakery

The schoolhouse pendant in Peeta’s bakery along with distressed concrete and faded paint gives the set an 1800s vintage look (photo credit: Murray Close). Create a similar “salt of the earth” rustic look using a few schoolhouse pendants in the kitchen or along a hallway. The effect is classic and welcoming.

Katniss’ Bedroom in the Capitol

Concrete walls are warmed by a modern lime green platform bed and candle-like pendants in Katniss’ Capitol bedroom. The pendants remind me of designer David Trubridge’s net-like pendants that create a similar effect. It’s amazing how a splash of color and a bit of candlelight can turn a cold, prison-like space into a cozy retreat.

The Dining Room in the Capitol

Showcasing wealth and a modern sense of couture fashion, the dining room at the Capitol is attractively lit by multi-sized Caviar Pendants by Arteriors. Is there anything more luxurious than caviar?
