The 12 Modern Lamps of Christmas: Day 9

The B.L.O. Table Lamp was designed by Marcel Wanders to resemble an old-fashioned candle holder, complete with a warm, flickering candle. The realistic interpretation is impressive, and a fun idea for an electric lighting fixture. But what does that name mean?

The B.L.O. Table Lamp was designed by Marcel Wanders to resemble an old-fashioned candle holder, complete with a warm, flickering candle. The realistic interpretation is impressive, and a fun idea for an electric lighting fixture. But what does that name mean?

That’s the really cool thing about B.L.O. The acronym doesn’t actually stand for anything. Rather, it tells you what to do with this lamp to control it. You blow on B.L.O. to turn it off, much like you would a real candle. (You also blow to turn it back on, which isn’t so easy to do with a real candle.) There’s also a regular on/off switch, but that’s not nearly as much fun.

The base comes in translucent Blue or opaque Silver injection-molded PMMA, while the flickering candle has its light enhanced by an attached stainless steel reflector.

All-in-all, the Flos B.L.O. Table Lamp is as fun to look at as it is to use. And it makes a great gift for anyone who loves the look and warmth of candlelight, but perhaps not so much the fire hazard associated with it.
