The round, retro shape of this lamp reminds me of a cartoon spaceman: a short body with a big, round space helmet. It makes me smile every time I look at it.
This classic 1967 design by Vico Magistretti for Artemide lighting is even cuter in person. It’s only seven inches tall, with its curvaceous little steel body coated in glossy lacquer–Silver, White or, my favorite, dusty Orange.
Considering how it functions, the space-age shape of the lamp is not coincidental. The brightness and spread of light is controlled by the incorporated rotating shield. The light is literally eclipsed by adjusting the shield around the light source.
This function and fun, soft shape make the Eclisse Bedside Table Lamp a great gift for the young and young at heart, and especially ideal for anyone who would appreciate having a bedside table lamp, nightlight and icon of mid-century modern design all-in-one.
