For the grand finale to our 12 Modern Lamps of Christmas, I decided to splurge. The Bourgie Table Lamp by Kartell exceeds the $200 budget a bit, but it was the first lamp I thought of when it came to lamps that make great gifts. And I just couldn’t let it go.
As I believe I’ve stated before, one of my favorite modern lighting design trends is reinterpreting classic forms using unusual materials and modern technology. This the Bourgie does exquisitely. Designer Ferruccio Laviani took the intricate, decadent detailing of classic baroque design and recreated it in glistening panels of polycarbonate. The modern, gleaming effect is carried through into the pleated polycarbonate shade.
Its shade height is adjustable, and it comes in a variety of translucent and opaque metallic colors, including the yummy new Opaque White lined with a Gold interior.
It’s no wonder that the Bourgie Lamp is one of Kartell’s bestsellers. It’s at once traditional, modern, innovative and ironic. When it comes to holiday gift-giving this year, the Bourgie is anything but bourgeois.
