We were saddened this week to hear the news that designer Tobias Wong passed away Sunday at the age of 35. The New York Times had a lovely obituary this week and a blog post today that aptly paid tribute to Wong’s wit and cheekiness as a talented designer.

We’ve always loved Wong’s practical-yet-unconventional design in the On Off Light Switch for Areaware, which was featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in 2002. It’s a fabulous example of Wong’s ability to combine function with cleverness—the On Off Light Switch works wirelessly to control a light up to 100 feet away. It’s also plated in a shiny chrome (the gold option has sold out and is no longer available) and encased in a Lucite box with a magnetic lid. The On Off Switch is a nice solution for those of us with quirky old houses that put light switches in the most inconvenient places, or for those of us who just want to be able to control the light wherever you’re at (hey, some of us are kind of lazy like that, OK?)
But in all seriousness, Wong shook up the design world with many of his projects, including 2001’s This is a lamp, a take on Philippe Starck’s Bubble Club Chair, the Rubber Chandelier in 2003 and the Money Pad in 2000. The work of Tobias Wong will be sincerely missed.
Lumens carries designs from Tobias Wong for the Areaware brand.
