Presented this year in Milan, Bertjan Pot’s Prop Light collection was a standout among Moooi’s ever-stunning exhibition. The bulbous prop lights are a group of go-anywhere, light-anything fixtures that work hanging from the ceiling, propped against a wall, on the floor or practically any other way you can think of, thanks to its numerous variations.
Each Prop Light uses anywhere from 18 to 96 lights, depending on the shape and configuration. While the aesthetic is a bit more old-timey (recalling the look of vanity lights in a Hollywood dressing room), each fixture uses energy-efficient LEDs under clear globe bulbs.
Designer Bertjan Pot has created a number of masterpieces for Moooi, including the well-recognized Random Light in 1999. His designs tend to start out as an experiment of materials, and in the end combine technique, structure, pattern and colors that push the boundaries of modern design.
