Happy Birthday to Designer Marcel Wanders

2010 July 2

Can you tell we like birthdays around here? We do. Today we’re celebrating the birthday of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, art director and co-owner of Moooi and creator of stunning design. Since creating the iconic Knotted Chair for Droog Design in 1996, Wanders has designed products for B&B Italia, Poliform, Flos and several others.

I love this about Moooi: the name means “beautiful” in Dutch, but Wanders (and co-founder Casper Vissers) added an “extra o because it is extra beautiful.” I mean, you just can’t argue with that. When you look at each Moooi product, it’s pretty clear that sentiment is at the forefront of each design.

Back to the birthday. Instead of blowing out candles, I picked my 3 favorite Marcel Wanders designs from Lumens.com. So, are these no-brainers or would you pick another 3 entirely?

Stone Stool by Kartell Marcel Wanders

OK, I know I just talked your ear off about Kartell, but the Stone Stool is a great piece. A very simple shape but in glamorous gemstone colors and an elegant texture. I’d love these on either side of my bed or outside on a fabulous patio (if I had said fabulous patio) since it’s weather resistant.

Skygarden S1 Suspension by Flos by Marcel Wanders

Helloooo gorgeous. The Skygarden S1 is such a beauty—sleek and modern on the outside, with a surprising classic detail inside, where it showcases sculptured garden foliage that as inspired by an antique decorated plaster ceiling in one of Wanders’ previous homes. That contrast lets it fit into a lot of different styles of spaces—it’s got a modern edge but keeps a bit of traditional influence.

Set Up Shades Floor Lamp by Moooi Marcel Wanders

Designed by Wanders waaaay back in 1989. (Moooi was founded in 2001). The Set Up Shades Floor Lamp challenges what many value as good design—is it straight? Is it one lamp or many? What is the base and what is the shade? Ask all you want, but the answers are probably open to your own interpretations—exactly why I think it’s so fun.

So, happy birthday to Mr. Wanders. Which of his designs are your favorites?
