Earth Day Everyday
Earlier this week, I talked about how great I think David Trubridge’s designs are. In the course of my research into his design inspirations and processes, the importance he places on sustainability and his overall environmental consciousness got me to thinking about other modern lighting designers that operate under similar philosophies.
So, in honor of Earth Day, I found a few other lighting designers that make sustainability an integral part of their beautiful and functional modern designs every day. (I know there are others, but these are the ones that immediately popped into my mind.)
Based in Las Vegas, NV, Varaluz was founded largely on the premise of promoting environmental responsibility in the lighting industry. In fact, the Varaluz motto is “70% recycled steel. 0% recycled style.”
The fun and super-creative designs Varaluz has come up with include pieces like the spiky steel Urchin Pendant and stained glass-like Fascination collection (which also uses 100% recycled glass). These lighting fixtures are made to inspire and stand the test of time, instead of ending up in a landfill.
From his studio in San Francisco, designer Pablo Pardo’s minimalist designs are created to have the greatest impact using the least amount of material. (A prime example of this is the super-slim LIM collection). Many of the designs also feature long-lasting and energy efficient LEDs (which are replaceable, so the lamp doesn’t have to go when the array does). On top of all that, many Pablo Pardo lighting designs are created out of materials that are recyclable. For example, up to 97% of the materials in the Link collection are fully recyclable.
Lights Up! is a contemporary lighting designer based in Brooklyn, NY. Their claim to fame has always been their incredible fabric shade collection. Within this collection, all of the patterned fabrics are made out of 100% recycled PET plastic bottles using water-based inks.
Additionally, the wood bases for their Woody floor and table lamps are sustainable New Zealand Pine. As a testament to their devotion to being green, Lights Up! is a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC), which is working to educate and set standards for eco-friendly design in the home furnishings industry.
In the manufacture of their task lighting designs, Herman Miller has “worked toward being a steward of the environment” since 1953. This includes everything that goes into the final fixture (LED lamping and recycled materials that are recyclable in turn) as well as manufacturing processes. Their all-encompassing environmental awareness program involves recycling and repurposing materials whenever possible, as well as reducing energy consumption. As of May of last year, Herman Miller uses 100% renewable electrical energy in all of their facilities worldwide.
